Are you suffering from severe asthma symptoms? During the spring and summer, it can be challenging for you to enjoy everyday activities if you continue to experience severe symptoms of asthma. You may feel like you have to give up things like sports, camping, or even walks in nature. Instead of abandoning the outdoor activities you enjoy, come to Allergy Asthma & Sleep Center for Excellence, where our board-certified doctors can help treat you for your asthma symptoms. Under the leadership of Dr. Mayank Shukla, we can treat you or a family member if they have severe asthma.
Can asthma be cured? What is the goal of asthma treatment?
Asthma, at this time, is not something that can be “cured.” We do have treatments for symptoms related to asthma and can help reduce their effects on you and in some cases, even remove them. The goal at our clinic is to provide you short term relief and long-term control of your asthma. Our highly experienced providers will customize a treatment plan to fit your needs and symptoms to provide relief. With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Shukla and his team are the right choices when it comes to asthma relief.
What types of asthma treatments are available at your clinic?
There is no single treatment to reduce the symptoms of asthma. Sometimes more than one form of treatment is needed, and other times only one form of treatment may be all that a patient requires. The various treatments we have at our clinic include medications, asthma nebulizers, and bronchodilators.
Anti-inflammatory drugs are usually the medication of choice to control asthma. These medications reduce the swelling of a patient’s airways, which is often the cause of many asthma symptoms. When an airway is swollen, it much harder for someone to get the oxygen their body needs to function. Swollen airways often lead to shortness of breath, dizziness, and coughing. Most anti-inflammatory drugs come in the form of steroids. Other options are available if steroids are aconcern, like biologics. Biologics are a relatively new class of asthma treatments that target the specific triggers of someone’s asthma outbreak.
Another asthma medication is bronchodilators. These come in the form of inhalers that provide fast-acting relief to severe asthma symptoms. Also known as rescue inhalers due to their quick-relief action, they should be carried by anyone who is at risk for life-threatening symptoms of asthma such as:
- Shortness of breath
Bronchodilators are most effective when combined with regular anti-inflammatory medications.
Children often have difficulty using inhalers every day. A nebulizer will help them take their medication by turning their medication into a mist they can breathe in. They avoid any possible frustration with an inhaler. A nebulizer is usually an extended mouthpiece for the inhaler.
Can my treatment be adjusted over time?
Yes! The providers at Allergy Asthma & Sleep Center for Excellence are always monitoring your condition and looking for changes in your body and symptoms. Lifestyle changes and growing tolerance for medications can also prompt changes in your treatment. Checking in with our clinic regularly ensures we can monitor your condition and make any changes if needed to your treatment plan.
