Snoring affects millions of Americans and is one of the most common sleep disorders. While men and those who are overweight are at the greatest risk of chronic snoring, it can cause distress for men and women of all ages and for about half of people who snore loudly, their issue is caused by obstructive sleep apnea. Snoring can cause sleep disruptions for people who snore as well as bed partners and other family members. It can also negatively impact your daily functions as you are unable to enjoy deep, sustained sleep. At Allergy & Asthma Sleep Center of Excellence, we can help create a customized treatment plan so that you can get the rest you need.
When a person sleeps, the muscles of their throat relax, becoming floppy and narrow. Then, as they breathe, the walls of their throat will vibrate, which is what causes the characteristic sounds we associate with snoring. The sounds become louder the narrower the airway is, and sometimes sleep apnea can cause the throat to collapse entirely. At Allergy & Asthma Sleep Center of Excellence, we have the knowledge and experience to help you understand and treat the causes of your snoring, so you can get the best night’s sleep possible.
There are many different things that can contribute to snoring, including anatomical abnormalities, the natural aging process, inflammation of the nose and throat caused by allergies or respiratory infections, and even the consumption of alcohol. People who snore are often unaware that they may be having this issue. Frequently, it is a partner or housemate who may first bring the problem to a person’s attention. If your snoring has disturbed someone else enough that they have told you about it, and you are noticing that you feel fatigued during the day, it may be time to seek out a sleep specialist to help treat your snoring problem.
At Allergy & Asthma Sleep Center of Excellence, our entire staff is dedicated to providing our patients with compassionate and comprehensive treatment services that address their unique concerns to help them get the best night’s sleep possible. For patients who snore, there are many different treatment options available, depending on your individual situation. For some, simple lifestyle modifications may be enough to eradicate snoring. This may include losing weight, avoiding alcohol, sleeping aids, and antihistamines before bedtime, or even sleeping on your side instead of your back. However, for many, this is not the case and more intensive treatment measures may be necessary.
Surgery to correct anatomical abnormalities at the back of the throat, in the nose, or the roof of the mouth may help open airways and stop a person’s snoring. For others, oral appliances or nasal dilators may help alleviate their symptoms. And for patients with sleep apnea, a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine may be necessary. A CPAP machine blows air into the back of the throat throughout the night, preventing it from collapsing so you can breathe more easily. Sleep apnea is a serious condition that, if left untreated, can increase your chances of vascular disease. Because of this, it is important to see a sleep specialist as soon as possible if you suspect you or your partner may have sleep apnea.
At Allergy & Asthma Sleep Center of Excellence, we offer comprehensive diagnosis and treatment services for a wide range of sleep disorders including snoring and sleep apnea. Let our experienced team of doctors offer you treatment options that are tailored to your body and your sleep needs.
