Here at Allergy Asthma & Sleep Center for Excellence, we have some of the most qualified, experienced, and board-certified doctors in the New York area to help your child take back their summer! Dr. Mayank Shukla provides excellent treatment to the care of children who suffer from severe asthma.

Can asthma be cured? What is the goal of asthma treatment?

Asthma is not curable. However, the treatment for asthma symptoms lies in the decrease, and sometimes even removal of the symptoms of asthma. The goal is to control the short- and long-term effects of asthma, bringing your child some much-needed relief. Here at Allergy Asthma & Sleep Center for Excellence, Dr. Shukla will develop the most effective strategy to reduce the symptoms of your child’s asthma. With 15 years of experience, Dr. Shukla is the right choice in relieving those symptoms.

What types of asthma treatments are available at your clinic?

There is not a straightforward treatment in the reduction of asthma symptoms. At times, depending on the severity of the symptoms, only one form of treatment is needed. For others, the procedure for asthma may require several types. The various treatments include Asthma Nebulizers, Bronchodilators, and medications.

With medications, anti-inflammatory drugs are used to control asthma symptoms. This is done by aiding the reduction of swelling within a person’s airways. When our airways are swollen, this reduces the ability to take in the oxygen one needs to sustain themselves, leading to issues of shortness of breath, and even dizziness. These anti-inflammatory medications typically come in the form of steroids. However, there are other options available should steroids be a concern. Another type of medication is bronchodilators. These inhalers offer fast-acting relief to those suffering from significant asthma conditions. They are considered to be “rescue inhalers” due to their quick abilities to relieve symptoms of an individual who may experience possible life-threatening symptoms of asthma such as wheezing, shortness of breath, tightness, and coughing. These are used for more emergent situations and are typically combined with one of the anti-inflammatory medications previously mentioned.

For those children who need an inhaler for daily use, a nebulizer helps with distributing the medication in a form that is more pleasing and less difficult. A nebulizer will create a mist with the inhaler, allowing the child to inhale the medication more easily and with less impact. This is done with the use of an extended mouthpiece to the inhaler itself.

Can my child’s treatment be adjusted over time?

Of course. Dr. Shukla and the team at Allergy Asthma & Sleep Center for Excellence understand that our bodies, asthma symptoms, lifestyle, and tolerance for medications can change. That is why we find it so important to check in with us as a patient to make sure we are giving you the best treatment to reduce and maintain your absence of symptoms due to your asthma.
