For most patients with asthma, they can control their symptoms by avoiding their specific triggers for attacks, having a quick-relief inhaler when symptoms develop and using daily long-term medication to help control it. However, some patients continue to have severe symptoms with asthma despite these treatments and still struggle to control their asthma. Recently, a new class of medications known as “biologics” have been approved to treat those who continue to have difficulty treating their moderate or severe asthma. This treatment targets a specific cell, molecule, or antibody involved with a patient’s asthma outbreak and therefore, is also known as “precision therapy.” You can make an appointment today at Allergy Asthma & Sleep Center for Excellence with Dr. Shukla to see if biologics are right for you.
What is a biologic medication?
This medication is made from cells of a living organism and is modified to target specific molecules in a patient’s body. In the case of those with asthma, it can target cell receptors, inflammatory molecules, or antibodies. A biologic will target these to disrupt the process that leads to inflammation, the cause of many asthma symptoms.
When would I need to use a biologic?
This medication is used for those who continue to have problems controlling their asthma. Despite short term and long-term treatments, patients continue to suffer from wheezing, shortness of breath, frequent coughing, require the routine use of “rescue inhalers,” and wake up at night with problems breathing. They also may require regular visits to the emergency room or steroids to bring their acute symptoms under control.
What are the benefits of a biologic medication?
Those who were treated with a biologic medication will find they have decreased visits to the emergency room and the need for oral steroids. They can also experience a reduced need for controller medication, meaning less missed days of work or school. Overall, biologics have been shown to improve the overall quality of life, and in some patients, improved lung function.
Are there restrictions for biologic medications to treat asthma?
Blood tests and skin prick testing is needed to determine which biologic will work best for you. Most biologics are intended for those over the age of 12, although one is available for those as young as six. Another biologic is generally prescribed only for adults 18 and older. The one that is right for you or a family member will be something you will discuss with our providers.
How are biologics medications administered?
Unlike other asthma medications, most biologics are administered via injection or IV infusion in our clinic. Depending on the biologic used and screening results before treatment, you may need to wait thirty minutes to two hours after the procedure for observation. We want to ensure there are no unforeseen reactions to the procedure.
How often will I need to visit your office for a treatment using biologics?
Every biologic medication is different, and their effects on patients do vary. However, we generally see the need for patients to visit every two to eight weeks for treatment.
What are the side effects of biologics?
Generally, research has shown these medications to be very safe. Some biologics carry a small risk for anaphylaxis, but an epinephrine autoinjector will be prescribed if that is a risk to you. We will also screen you for certain parasitic infections and check your varicella vaccination status. Other than that, the most common side effects are sore throat, fatigue, headache, and soreness at the injection site.
