Do skin prick allergy tests hurt?

While the name may seem intimidating, skin prick allergy tests utilize extremely small needles called lancets to deposit miniscule amounts of specific allergens into the upper layer of your skin. These lancets are so small they cause almost no discomfort at all. However, the allergens that are deposited will cause irritation in the skin if they return a positive (allergic) result. A small, red bump will appear where allergens you are sensitive to have been deposited. These bumps can look a lot like mosquito bites and are generally itchy, though not painful. Skin prick tests are typically performed on the forearms of adults, but children will usually undergo testing on their upper back. This keeps the irritated parts of their skin out of their reach, so they don’t scratch or pick at the area being tested.

How quickly will I learn the results of my skin prick allergy test?

One of the greatest advantages of a skin prick allergy test is that you receive your results almost immediately. Once the allergens have been deposited under the surface of your skin, your doctor will wait approximately 15 minutes before evaluating your reaction. Any bumps created by the allergens will be measured in order to determine the severity of your allergy response on a scale of 1-5+. Your doctor can then discuss your specific allergies with you and provide you with information about potential treatment options, so you can begin managing your allergy symptoms as quickly as possible. We know that you and your family have a busy schedule, so we strive to offer the effective allergy testing services you need when it works well for your schedule. All 3 of our locations in the NYC area are open Monday-Saturday, so you can schedule an allergy skin prick test when it works best for your schedule.
